I think there reaches a point where you just have to admit that you can’t prepare for all eventualities. The US has been relatively lucky, which makes it easier for us to subscribe to that myth. But many Japanese or French or Germans or Russians or Chinese learned the hard way that no amount of the right asset allocation or a big enough portfolio can always protect you from everything.
